Last night I read the NY Times article about Landmark selling off the Weather Channel. I was stunned but more than that, I was puzzled. The Weather Channel is the largest part of the Landmark portfolio and generates a lot of cash for the company (I don’t know how much because Landmark is private and info isn’t published).
So what now for Landmark (BTW, why push all web surfing onto a SSL server? There isn’t anything that secret on the site, is there?)? If estimates are correct that the sale of Weather Channel will generate $5 billion (which I don’t doubt), the family that owns the company will need to invest that money somehow.
There is only one area that I know that they’ve been recently investing money - Internet businesses. Obviously, I know this because they bought my old company, Digital Envoy, last year. But what else are they going to do? They own a number of other companies engaged in online business. Is this the next wave for Landmark? I can’t imagine Digital Envoy will be spun off since it was just recently purchased, although stranger things have happened. If it is and you own a company that complements or augments their current portfolio of Internet companies, I’d start positioning your company now for an acquisition.
